EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
