Patients Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these medications need to be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to original mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs explains the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have come off the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

In conclusion, researchers stress that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
