"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" an inquiry arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Several celebrated supporters have openly petitioned for the position.

The evidence suggests something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path performing shows at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best ensembles, they're a close unit. Their music videos frequently depict them marching in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can encourage people to make music."

"So anyone are welcome to be the fourth member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The trio have called into home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this right or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the nomination is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge milestone," continues Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project came out of a period of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The lyrics track endings and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them working out in real time who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound resilience required a fresh approach – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's honesty fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal horror stories.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an global following.

But the sister act will forever be their number one focus.

"We have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still making music."
