We have observed across decades while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of our understanding of him. Essentially, they converted a persona of love into an icon of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, yet it remains unsettling through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically Christ is the focus of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre within America may possess limited understanding about him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or nones. I have no problem with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that there are pearls of substantial value in the Christian story.

Jesus' answer to aggression is to turn the additional cheek – not as a gesture of passive acceptance, but as a means to instruct the aggressor; his method regarding offenses is that if a person pilfers your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing as well.
The obvious and direct fact that the Jesus of the gospels requests a kind of extreme compassion focused on the poor has consistently rendered the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: engaging for the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be contained.
